Wolverhampton Wanderers (Wolves) have confirmed the appointment of Rob Edwards as their new manager on a three-and-a-half-year contract, following the dismissal of Vitor Pereira earlier this month.

Edwards joins from Middlesbrough, where he had been head coach since June, guiding them to second place in the Championship, five points behind leaders Coventry City.

His move to Molineux was finalised after Wolves agreed a compensation package with Middlesbrough, who initially rejected their approach.

A familiar face at the club, Edwards made 111 appearances for Wolves as a player between 2004 and 2008. His appointment marks a homecoming for the 42-year-old, who also gained Premier League experience managing Luton Town.

Wolves currently sit bottom of the Premier League, with just two points from 11 matches, following a disappointing start to the season under Pereira.

Edwards will be joined by his longtime assistant Harry Watling, who also leaves Middlesbrough to take up the role of assistant head coach.

In a statement, Middlesbrough acknowledged Edwards’ departure:

“Rob had signed a three-year contract with ourselves during the summer, but after he made it clear he was keen to join Wolves, we reluctantly agreed a figure of compensation for both himself and one of his first team coaches, Harry Watling.”

    They added:

“On Saturday, the Riverside came together as one — players, staff, and supporters — and you could feel the sense of unity which is at the core of our club. To everyone involved, we would like to say thank you.”

Wolves’ executive chairman Jeff Shi praised the new boss, highlighting his familiarity with the club and tactical maturity:

“Rob showed tactical awareness when he was a youth coach here. After he took first-team jobs, he started to grow his own identity, character, and leadership. He’s a very good person who knows the club, the city, and the fans — and he is very talented.”

Edwards’ first task will be to lift Wolves out of the relegation zone and restore confidence to a struggling side that has won none of its opening 11 league games this season.
