Davido Eyes Nollywood: “I Want to Play a Taxi Driver or Something Unexpected”

Award-winning Afrobeats superstar Davido has revealed plans to explore a new creative path in acting and film production, marking what could be a bold expansion of his already illustrious career.
Speaking at a panel session during the 2025 Africa International Film Festival (AFRIFF) in Lagos, the Unavailable hitmaker shared his excitement about venturing into the movie industry and his passion for telling authentic African stories.
The panel, themed “Rhythms of the Continent: The Afrobeat Movement and Its Impacts on African Film,” brought together leading voices from music and cinema to discuss how both industries continue to shape Africa’s global image.
For Davido, film is simply the next chapter in his creative journey.
“My brother said he wanted to give me a role, and I told him I wanted to play a taxi driver or something unexpected,” he said with a laugh.
The singer, whose real name is David Adeleke, explained that acting has always been something he wanted to try. But beyond the thrill of being on screen, he said his deeper motivation lies in using film to promote the richness of African identity.
“I definitely want to get involved in movies,” he added. “It’s another way to tell our stories and show the world the richness of African culture.”
Drawing inspiration from global entertainers who have successfully crossed over into film, Davido cited 50 Cent as one of his biggest influences, noting how the American rapper built a legacy that transcends music.
The superstar also hinted at ambitions beyond acting, particularly in film production, where he hopes to spotlight narratives rooted in African culture, resilience, and creativity. He praised story-driven works like Uncorked, saying such projects remind him of the power of storytelling in shaping cultural pride and personal growth.
Known for breaking barriers in music, Davido believes the synergy between film and Afrobeats can elevate Africa’s voice globally.
He said both industries are vital in changing how the world sees the continent, not just as a source of rhythm and colour, but as a hub of depth, talent, and authenticity.
Through his new pursuit, Davido aims to bridge the gap between music and film, inspiring a new generation of African creatives to dream beyond boundaries.
