    • Women determine the popularity of songs – Darkoo

British-Nigerian artist Darkoo has credited women with being the major force behind the success of songs and the emergence of global music trends.

Speaking on the Comfortably Speaking podcast, the Favourite Girl crooner emphasized that women’s tastes often dictate what becomes popular, noting how their choices frequently influence men’s playlists.

She highlighted the rise of Amapiano as a clear example, pointing out that women were the first to adopt the South African sound, creating dance challenges online that later drew men into the movement.

“The reality is that women set the pace in music and even in the world at large,” Darkoo remarked. “Most times, men end up vibing to songs because women like them. Amapiano is the perfect example — at first, women were dancing to it on social media and people thought it was odd, but now everyone is on it.”

The singer also gave a relatable scenario: “You pick up a girl in your car, you’re not playing just trap all through. You’ll play what she wants to hear, and that’s how women end up shaping the music men enjoy too.”

Darkoo has been no stranger to bold takes. Just last month, she sparked reactions online after declaring that “every woman is gay but may not realize it yet.”

According to her, many women find other women attractive but have never been approached or given the opportunity to explore those feelings.

“I genuinely believe a lot of women like women,” she said. “If a straight woman approaches me to experiment, I’m open to it.”

The singer further clarified her preferences, admitting that despite assumptions, she actually finds straight women particularly appealing. “I’m not out here trying to turn them gay,” she explained. “But from my perspective, I love straight women.”

“A lot of music you like is because women like it.”
