Manchester City have officially completed the signing of highly rated Norwegian midfielder Sverre Nypan from Eliteserien outfit Rosenborg for a reported fee of £12.5 million ($17 million), bringing an end to months of speculation and competition from several top European clubs.

The 17-year-old prodigy had drawn significant interest from the likes of Arsenal and Aston Villa, with both clubs sending scouts to Norway in hopes of sealing a deal. However, City’s recruitment team moved swiftly to secure Nypan’s signature, viewing him as a major addition to their long-term project.

While a loan move remains under discussion for the upcoming season, no club has yet been finalized. For now, Nypan is set to join Pep Guardiola’s first team for preseason training beginning Monday, July 28, providing the teenager with a valuable first taste of elite-level football.

Speaking in his debut interview with City’s media team, Nypan shared his excitement:

“I am incredibly happy and proud to have joined Manchester City. It’s a dream for any young footballer to become part of this club and to join such a group of world-class talent. I am still very young with a lot to learn, but the chance to be coached by Pep Guardiola — the best manager in the world — will only help me grow.”

He also acknowledged his pride in continuing the Norwegian-Manchester City pipeline, following in the footsteps of Erling Haaland and Oscar Bobb:

“There is already a special connection between Norway and Manchester City, and I am proud to be the latest Norwegian player to join this incredible club.”

Nypan burst onto the scene in Norway at just 15 years and 322 days, becoming one of the youngest debutants in Eliteserien history — only slightly older than Martin Ødegaard at his own debut. Since then, he has made 70 senior appearances for Rosenborg, notching 8 goals and 6 assists in the 2024 season alone.

Often compared to Ødegaard for his creativity, composure, and maturity on the ball, Nypan has also been a standout for Norway’s youth teams. He debuted for the Under-19s at 16, and by 17, had earned a call-up to the U-21 squad, already logging six appearances at that level — underlining his rapid progression and senior national team potential.

Nypan becomes City’s second midfield addition of the summer following the signing of Tijjani Reijnders from AC Milan. While Reijnders is expected to reinforce the midfield immediately, Nypan represents a longer-term investment aimed at extending City’s reign at the top for years to come.

Manchester City kick off their 2025/26 Premier League campaign against Wolves on August 16.
