Afrobeats megastar David Adeleke, better known as Davido, has opened up about the relentless criticism and backlash he has faced throughout his illustrious career, describing himself as the “most bashed and disrespected” Nigerian artist in history.

In a candid interview, the DMW boss discussed the impact of online trolling, revealing that negative comments not only affect him personally but also extend to the artists signed under his label.

Davido shared that he always advises his signees to ignore online trolls, as social media negativity can have a lasting emotional impact on anyone, especially emerging artists.

He also reflected on the aggressive reactions he has received from certain fans, particularly those loyal to other artists. While Davido didn’t directly mention any names, much of the criticism has stemmed from Wizkid and Burna Boy‘s fan bases, with whom he has had public disputes over the years.

Speaking about the growing attacks online, Davido said, “If you see the crazy things they say, I can’t even show my wife because I know she will break down.”

He also noted how the monetization opportunities on platforms like X (formerly Twitter) have only fueled more attacks, as some users try to profit from viral posts targeting him.

In his words, “I think in the history of Nigerian artists, I have been the most bashed and disrespected artist,” adding, “In Nigeria, if you are the son of a successful man, you gonna get it.”

Davido also shared a poignant story about one of his biggest critics. After finally meeting the person in question, he realized that the critic was only targeting him to grow their audience and make money off viral attacks.

Despite the incessant negativity, Davido continues to shine, building his legacy as one of Africa’s most influential music exports. His resilience and commitment to his craft have inspired many, and he remains a dominant figure in the Afrobeats movement.
