My music is not mid – Joeboy replies critics
Nigerian singer Joeboy has fired back at critics labelling his music as “mid,” confidently asserting that mediocrity has no place in his life or career.
Appearing on the ‘Backstage Banter‘ podcast, the Afrobeats star addressed the backlash, attributing the criticism to people’s dissatisfaction with their own lives.
“There’s nothing mid about my existence,” Joeboy stated firmly. “If I’ve achieved so much at my age, it’s a testament to my hard work, not mediocrity.”
The singer went on to challenge the overuse of the term “mid,” questioning its true meaning. “What exactly is ‘mid’? It’s just one of those buzzwords people throw around without context,” he said, suggesting that the criticism stems more from trends than substance.
His remarks have ignited a heated conversation on social media, with fans rallying in his defense and some critics doubling down on their opinions.
Regardless, Joeboy’s success—marked by chart-topping hits and a growing international fanbase—continues to speak louder than the words of his detractors.

In the same interview with media personality Isi Ijewere on the ‘Backstage Banter with Isi’ show, Joeboy recounted the challenges he faced growing up and how they shaped his vision to give back.
Reflecting on his experiences, Joeboy revealed the embarrassment he often endured due to unpaid school fees.
“When I was younger, I used to owe school fees a lot, and it became embarrassing. When I was in JSS3, the secretary who came to announce the names of those owing fees arrived, and before she even began calling names, the whole class said mine: ‘Akinfewa Joseph.’ It pained me!”
