I have nothing against European people – Seun Kuti sets record straight
Nigerian singer and activist Seun Kuti has taken to social media to clarify his position on European colonialism, stressing that his opposition is directed at colonial systems and not European people.
In an Instagram post on January 13, 2025, Kuti shared an image featuring a quote that elaborated on his views. The quote, which calls for a fairer world, read: “I’m against European colonisation and imperialism, but that doesn’t mean I’m against European people. Many Europeans have been our allies in fighting against greed and unfair systems, working to make the world a fairer place for everyone.”
Kuti’s statement aimed to clear up any misunderstandings surrounding his previous remarks about European colonialism.
He explained that while he strongly opposes colonial and imperialist practices, his views should not be interpreted as animosity toward individuals of European descent.
“Being against colonization doesn’t mean being against Europeans, many have stood with us in the fight for justice and fairness,” Kuti added in his Instagram caption.
The post quickly sparked an array of reactions online, with social media users engaging in passionate debates about systemic inequality, the legacy of colonialism, and the need for a more just world.
