Speed Darlington files N300 Million suit against IGP

Controversial Nigerian artist Speed Darlington has initiated a legal battle against the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, demanding N300 million in damages for what he described as an unlawful and prolonged detention.

The suit comes in the aftermath of Darlington’s arrest late last year over remarks he made about Afrobeat superstar Burna Boy. The police had accused the rapper of defamation and cyberstalking in connection with his statements.

Despite being granted bail by the Federal High Court on December 23, 2024, Darlington remained in custody, sparking outrage among his supporters.

His lawyer publicly alleged that Burna Boy had influenced the police to keep the singer detained, a claim that has not been substantiated.

The situation took a dramatic turn on Monday, January 6, 2025, when the court reiterated its directive for Darlington’s immediate release. A few hours later, the rapper escalated the matter by filing a lawsuit against the IGP, citing violations of his fundamental rights.

Darlington’s legal team is demanding compensation for the emotional and psychological distress caused by the detention, emphasizing the need for accountability and justice.

As of press time, neither the IGP nor Burna Boy has responded to the allegations or the lawsuit. The case has stirred significant attention, with many Nigerians closely following developments in the ongoing saga.
