Davido is a gospel artiste – Pastor Tobi Adegboyega defends birthday party
Controversial British pastor Tobi Adegboyega has finally addressed criticism for featuring secular artists at his 2023 birthday party instead of gospel performers.
In a recent appearance on the Off the Record podcast, the founder of Salvation Proclaimers Anointed Church defended his decision, emphasizing the value of loyalty and friendship over public opinion.
“Gospel means good news. Everyone there is a gospel artist. Davido is a gospel artist. Have you heard ‘Because I stand strong?'” he asked, referencing the Nigerian singer’s hit song.
Adegboyega explained that the performers at his event were personal friends who had supported him through life’s ups and downs.
“Davido told me himself, ‘I know you’re busy, but I just want to be there and perform for one hour.’ They’re my friends. I didn’t pay any of them. They love me, and I will give my friends platforms,” he shared.
The pastor also dismissed criticism from gospel artists and their supporters questioning whether the event aligned with church principles.
“If gospel artistes aren’t my friends and instead join the bandwagon to criticize me, asking, ‘Is that a church?’ What should I do? Drag them with a rope?”
He further elaborated on his bond with the performers, highlighting his deep connection with them:
“Everyone in that room was my friend, every single person. Zlatan is like a son to me; his kids are my kids, and his parents have been to my house. Should I now say, ‘Because you’re not gospel artistes, let me go find gospel artistes who are criticizing me and force them to sing?’
Adegboyega concluded with a resolute statement:
“My friends will always sing at my events, and the next one will be even bigger because my circle of friends keeps growing.”
