I was Nigeria’s sweetheart until I got divorced – Tiwa Savage
Nigerian music icon Tiwa Savage has candidly shared the emotional toll of the public’s reaction to her divorce from former manager Teebillz in 2018, revealing how the support she once enjoyed turned into criticism during a challenging period of her life.
In a recent interview on the Receipts podcast on Spotify, Tiwa reflected on her rise to fame and the love she garnered from Nigerians before her marriage and divorce. She explained that her journey was marked by careful decisions, which earned her the admiration of many.
“When I came out, I was Nigeria’s sweetheart when I started and I could do no wrong in Nigerians’ eyes. I did everything by the books, I did everything by the books, you know, I went to university and I wasn’t a baby mama. I got married, then I had a baby so I did everything in the right order and everybody loved me and then everything happened.”
However, the tide turned dramatically after her highly publicized divorce, which was announced by Teebillz. The singer recalled how, despite not being the one to initiate the breakup, she became the subject of intense criticism.
“Then I started getting hate from blogs and I started getting hate from certain people. And that’s how our situation happened, he actually announced it online. I didn’t break up with him but I was the one being attacked and my baby was just a few months old and I was dealing with postpartum and my body wasn’t the same and I was really depressed. Everyone then went to him and only a few people came to see me,” she shared.
Tiwa also spoke about the aftermath of attempting to set the record straight in the media, which only seemed to escalate the backlash.
“After I did an interview to tell my side of the story, it got worse. People were like ‘How dare you go and talk?’ ‘You’re a woman and you’re supposed to build the house, it’s your fault.’”
The singer revealed that even some prominent individuals cautioned her against speaking out, warning that it would harm her career and public image.
“I remember famous people calling me to ask how I could tell my side of the story because I’d never win. Ever since then, I was like I won’t ever talk about the situation because it was very heartbreaking how the public took it.”
Tiwa’s emotional revelations shed light on the pressures and public scrutiny that come with being in the limelight, especially during personal struggles. Her experience serves as a reminder of the challenges many face when dealing with personal issues in the public eye.
