    Erik ten Hag has been dismissed by Manchester United following a dismal start to the 2024/25 season. The team currently sits in a disappointing 14th place in the Premier League, having lost four out of their first nine matches.

    The latest setback came in a 2-1 defeat against West Ham United, which was sealed by a controversial late penalty awarded to Jarrod Bowen.

    United finds themselves seven points adrift of the Champions League qualification spots and has managed just four victories from 14 matches in all competitions, a poor record that ultimately led to Ten Hag’s departure after two and a half years at the helm.

    In a brief statement, Manchester United expressed their gratitude to Ten Hag for his contributions and wished him well in future endeavors. “Ruud van Nistelrooy will serve as interim head coach, supported by the current coaching staff, while the search for a permanent head coach begins,” the statement read.

    Ten Hag reportedly learned of his sacking on Monday morning, just months after the club’s new minority owners, INEOS, triggered a one-year extension on the contract he signed when he joined in 2022.

    The decision to keep Ten Hag initially surprised some observers, especially after United recorded their worst-ever Premier League finish last season, placing 8th with 60 points and suffering 14 defeats.

    However, it was largely viewed as a reward for winning the FA Cup against Manchester City.

    Although Ten Hag secured a trophy in his first season by winning the Carabao Cup against Newcastle United, his tenure was marred by numerous poor performances on the pitch and a significant injury crisis.

    Several high-profile signings during his time also failed to deliver results, despite Ten Hag’s insistence that he was the right person to lead the club forward.

    While Thomas Tuchel, previously mentioned as a potential successor, is now out of the running after accepting the England job, other candidates under consideration include Gareth Southgate, Thomas Frank, Xavi, and Julian Nagelsmann, all of whom have been linked to the managerial position at various times.
