Oxlade reveals the reason he once ran away from home
Nigerian singer Oxlade has opened up about his decision to drop out of university and leave home due to threats from cultists during his time at Lagos State University (LASU).
In an interview with ‘Punch Newspapers‘ on September 18, 2024, he recounted the harrowing experience that led him to prioritize his safety over finishing his education.
“I dropped out of university in my final year because it was a crazy time. Gangs were after me just because I’m a fine boy. It was either I joined them or they took me out. So I had to leave,” Oxlade explained.
He noted that LASU has since improved its focus on academics, but during his time there, the environment was dangerous. “It was a hot period back then. Now, everyone is focused on making money,” he remarked, crediting the university for its progress in curbing such threats today.
Oxlade also revealed that after leaving school, he ran away from home, unable to explain to his family why he dropped out.
He first opened up about his experience with cultists during an interview on the ‘Tea with Tay Podcast’ in October 2023, where he shared how being devoted to church and his studies didn’t shield him from becoming a target.
In a heartfelt moment, Oxlade recalled how his grandmother unknowingly saved his life by asking him to come to Ibadan. “I don’t know how my grandma knew, but she told me not to pack anything from the hostel and come home. A few days later, my roommates told me they were attacked because of me,” he said, grateful for her intervention.
