Singer Oxlade reveals why he says love is overrated
Nigerian singer Oxlade recently opened up about his experience with love and heartbreak during an appearance on The 90’s Baby Show, shedding light on the meaning behind his popular lyric, “I feel like love is overrated.”
The singer spoke about his ex-girlfriend and the events that shifted his perspective on love, although he chose not to reveal her identity.
When asked about the breakup, Oxlade simply referred to his ex as “a thing” and explained why he did not want to expose her: “I feel like you don’t do evil for evil. I can’t expose her, my community will. There are stalkers that go crazy; they will find you. I promise you, it’s the internet.”
He went on to clarify that societal pressures, not just her actions, played a significant role in the downfall of their relationship.
Recalling a specific moment, Oxlade shared that while visiting her hostel, he overheard her friends questioning her: “Girl, what are you doing with Oxlade?” He explained that hearing this hurt him deeply, as at the time, their relationship was based on “true love and words of affirmation,” not material wealth.
That incident left a lasting impact on Oxlade, changing his outlook on love. He noticed her behavior gradually shifting until she eventually got involved with someone she had previously denied seeing.
This heartbreak, experienced during his early “hustle era,” made Oxlade realize the complexities of love. He concluded, “Love is sweet, but it’s not everywhere. You can’t find true love everywhere, and you must be lucky. God wants you to see love before you can find it.”
