Shallipopi reveals why Nigerian artists should charge same as American stars

In a recent interview with News Central TV, Nigerian singer Shallipopi addressed the ongoing conversation surrounding the high fees charged by Nigerian artists, who have been accused of overpricing themselves. He explained that an artist’s booking fee is directly tied to the success and reach of their music.

Shallipopi stated, “It depends on your music and where it has gotten, that’s what your price is going to be.”

He argued that Nigerian artists who achieve the same streaming numbers as their American counterparts should be able to charge similar fees. “If your music has gotten the same stream as an American artist, you should be charging the way they charge,” he said, adding that only those without equivalent reach shouldn’t overcharge.

“If you music is getting as much streams as American artistes, you should charge like them but if your streams is not up to that, you cannot overcharge. There is nobody that overcharges, don’t let these people whine you”

He rejected the popular belief that Nigerian artists have made themselves unaffordable within the local market, emphasizing that they are simply charging their worth and deserve to be paid accordingly.

As Afrobeats continues to gain global recognition, Nigerian artists have seen their international demand grow significantly, leading to higher booking fees.

However, this surge has made it increasingly difficult for local promoters to book A-list Nigerian stars, as fees have risen to hundreds of thousands of dollars.
