Chelsea have confirmed the signing of João Félix from Atlético Madrid, with the Portuguese forward committing to a seven-year contract.

The 24-year-old, who previously had a loan spell at Chelsea during the second half of the 2022/23 season, returns to Stamford Bridge after scoring four goals in 20 appearances in all competitions during his initial stint. He spent the subsequent season on loan at Barcelona, where he netted 10 goals.

The transfer fee for Félix is reported to be approximately £44.5 million, with Atlético Madrid securing a sell-on clause as part of the deal. This signing is one of several high-profile arrivals at Chelsea this summer, alongside players like Omari Kellyman, Tosin Adarabioyo, Marc Guiu, Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall, Renato Viega, Caleb Wiley, and Pedro Neto.

In his statement on Chelsea’s official website, Félix expressed his excitement about returning to the club and the Premier League, noting the familiar faces from his previous time with the Blues. He emphasized his fondness for the club and his eagerness to contribute to their success.

He told Chelsea’s website: “I’m really happy to be back at Chelsea and I can’t wait to get started. I can see some familiar faces from the last time I was here, which is always nice.

“I loved my time here before and I told my friends and family that I’d love to return to the Premier League one day. To do that with Chelsea is a great feeling and I’m excited to be back.”

Félix initially joined Atlético Madrid in 2019 for a record-breaking €126 million (£113 million) fee, making him the fourth-highest transfer in football history at the time.

However, his time in Spain was marked by inconsistency, scoring only 34 goals in 131 appearances and facing challenges under former manager Diego Simeone. His move to Chelsea marks a fresh start, offering him another opportunity to prove his worth in the Premier League.

Chelsea’s manager, Enzo Maresca, now has another creative option in the final third, with Félix expected to compete for a spot alongside the likes of Christopher Nkunku, Cole Palmer, and Enzo Fernández, who featured prominently in Chelsea’s Premier League opener against Manchester City.

The deal also continues the busy transfer activity between Chelsea and Atlético Madrid, following Conor Gallagher’s confirmed move to the Spanish side.
