Terry G explains why he failed to clear his collaboration with Wizkid.
During his appearance on the Afrobeats Podcast, Terry G provided insights into why he failed to clear his collaboration ‘Mary Jane’ with Wizkid and why he was asked to take down the song.
Terry G, a seminal figure in Nigerian street pop, explained that during his earlier days in the music industry, collaborations were often based on love and respect among colleagues, with no formalities or need for clearance before releasing songs. He shared with host Adesope in pidgin, “When we did the song, it was all about love and there was nothing like clearance.”
However, Terry G acknowledged that the music business has evolved, emphasizing the importance of professionalism and obtaining necessary clearances in today’s industry landscape.
He revealed that Wizkid’s lawyers had contacted his management, requesting the removal of ‘Mary Jane’ from circulation. In response, Terry G instructed his team to take down the song.
The release of ‘Mary Jane’ in 2024 surprised fans, given that the song was recorded many years ago, leading to speculation about whether it had been cleared by Wizkid.
Despite the takedown notice, Terry G expressed continued admiration for Wizkid, describing him as the Jay Z of his generation and emphasizing his respect for the Grammy-winning artist.
In addition to discussing the clearance issue, Terry G also reflected on the inspiration behind his eccentric style of music that propelled him to mainstream success during the interview with Adesope on the Afrobeats Podcast.
