Tiwa Savage on new film: ‘It’s a story about love, about female empowerment’
Tiwa Savage has embraced her boss lady persona by returning to her first love: acting. Her latest film, “Water and Garri,” is set to premiere on Prime Video on May 10, 2024.
In an interview with ABC, she explored the global impact of Afrobeat on pop culture, highlighting its widespread influence. Tiwa Savage also delved into her passion for acting, revealing it as her initial love, and expressed her delight in rediscovering the craft. She described her upcoming film as a significant milestone, symbolizing a full-circle moment in her career.
“Water and Garri” follows the journey of an ambitious fashion designer named Aisha (portrayed by Tiwa) who returns to her native country after spending a decade in the U.S., prompted by a family bereavement. Directed by Meji Alabi, the film has been long-awaited, with Tiwa Savage having curated the tracklist for the movie back in 2021. The accompanying EP, also titled “Water and Garri,” features collaborations with Brandy, Amaarae, and Tay Iwar.
She said, “Executive producing was like me just putting my boss hat on and trying to be a boss lady in all aspects of my life. It was fun and it was stressful doing that and also starring in it. But it just showed me that I can do anything I put my mind to. There are so many things that I have dreams of accomplishing and now I’m really motivated”.
“I’ve always wanted to do acting. I’ve always wanted to do movies. Actually, that was my first love before music. So it felt like a full circle moment for me. I just felt it was time for me to finally get into that. I never wanted to let go of music, so it’s a great way for me to still embody that.”
