Davido names the American rapper who was his favourite childhood artist
Nigerian Afrobeat superstar Davido has revealed the American rapper who was his favorite childhood artist. Hip hop has been a significant influence on Afrobeats music, fashion, and lifestyle, as seen in the music and lifestyle of Nigerian superstars like Davido.
In behind-the-scenes footage of his recent appearance on Billboard X Honda, Davido was asked about his favorite artist growing up, and the Nigerian hitmaker chose one of America’s hip-hop icons.
The DMW boss disclosed that he was a big hip-hop fan during his upbringing, and the dominating rapper of the 2000s, 50 Cent, was his favorite.
“I was a big hip-hop fan growing up, so I will say 50 Cent,” Davido said.
The influence of hip-hop on Davido’s artistry and lifestyle is evident in his collaborations with rappers and his fondness for flashy jewelry chains.
In the interview, the Grammy winner also reiterated that he will be releasing a new album in 2024 and hitting the road for a tour.
Davido is set to premiere a new song, ‘Flex My Soul,’ on the Billboard X Honda stage. He first teased the song in 2023, and it is expected to be featured on his upcoming album.
The acclaimed artist reminisces about his initial fascination with music, tracing it back to the lively gatherings hosted by his mother.
“My mom used to throw a lot of parties when I was young and from there, it can of like form into me loving music,” Davido said.
Davido kicked off his career as a producer before transitioning into singing. Despite never envisioning himself as an artist, he skyrocketed to music stardom with his debut single.
“In my head at that time I never think I would be in the forefront, be an artist. One day one of my cousins decided to release one my songs as me and when I move back to Nigeria I just took it on full time”.
