Nigerian music sensation Yemi Alade has unveiled the surprising backstory behind her chart-topping single, ‘Johnny.’
In an interview with online personality Temisan on January 16, 2024, the talented singer disclosed that the song didn’t have an official release but instead surfaced through a leak.
Despite gracing the AFCON opening ceremony in Cote d’Ivoire recently, Alade confessed that she initially had no intention of officially dropping the song. When questioned about the massive success of ‘Johnny,’ she acknowledged sensing its potential impact, even though it wasn’t part of her initial plans.
In her own words, “I never thought. It was a song that was leaked. I did not even release it officially.”
“It was leaked. If you find the picture, it’s a picture of me. Yhe profile picture is me with some blund weave holding one white little puppy. It leaked online. It was never officially released. Yes. It probably would never have been released if God found a way to move people and things around and the song,” she added.
Highlighting the serendipitous journey of ‘Johnny,’ the self-proclaimed ‘Mama Africa’ elaborated on an unforeseen chapter in her career.
Amid an unsponsored tour traversing from state to state, her final destination in Enugu State marked a turning point. Encountering a studio and a supportive producer, she decided to spontaneously freestyle a song overnight. The outcome was ‘Johnny,’ a track that resonated with everyone as exceptionally promising.
However, upon her arrival in Lagos the following day, an unexpected twist occurred—the song leaked online. Yemi Alade expressed her initial frustration, particularly given her ongoing promotional efforts for another song.
Despite her initial vexation, she soon found herself inundated with calls, witnessing a buzz that originated in the East and gradually swept across the nation, ultimately transforming ‘Johnny’ into a massive hit beyond Nigeria.
Reflecting on the unexpected sequence of events, Yemi Alade shared how her original plans diverged significantly from the path that destiny had laid out for her.
