Giorgio Chiellini confirms retirement from football
Legendary Juventus and Italy center-back Giorgio Chiellini has officially announced his retirement from football at the age of 39. Chiellini spent the last two years of his illustrious career at MLS club LAFC, winning an MLS Cup in 2022 but falling short in the recent cup final against Columbus Crew.
In a statement posted on X, Chiellini expressed gratitude for the beautiful and intense journey that football had provided him. He reflected on the significant chapters and unforgettable moments, stating, “But now it is time to start new chapters, face new challenges, and write further important and exciting pages of life.”
Chiellini’s football career began at hometown club Livorno in 2000/01 before moving to Fiorentina in 2004/05. His performances at left back attracted Juventus, where he joined in 2005. Notably, Chiellini played a crucial role as a center-back under Claudio Ranieri’s management during Juventus’ return to Serie A following the Calciopoli scandal.
Over his 17-year tenure with Juventus, Chiellini became a club legend and one of the best defenders of his generation. Alongside his ‘BBC’ partners Leonardo Bonucci and Andrea Barzagli, he secured nine consecutive Serie A titles between 2011 and 2020, along with five Coppa Italia triumphs.
On the international stage, Chiellini captained Italy to a historic Euro 2020 victory, displaying a defensive masterclass in the final against England at Wembley Stadium.
You have been the most beautiful and intense journey of my life.
You have been my everything. With you I have travelled a unique and unforgettable path.
But now it is time to start new chapters, face new challenges and write further important and exciting pages of life. pic.twitter.com/IjHDDE4jMe— Giorgio Chiellini (@chiellini) December 12, 2023
