Mayorkun opens up about the process of his new EP, ‘Love for Free’
Talented singer Mayorkun recently discussed his new EP ‘Love for Free‘ and shed light on his musical style, which he refers to as Afro-fusion.
In an interview with Reality TV star Tacha on the Big Friday show, Mayorkun shared insights about his relationship status, the creation of his latest EP, ‘Love for Free,’ his connection with Davido, and his unique musical style. When asked about his thought process for the song ‘lowkey,’ Mayorkun revealed that he was in a dark place emotionally when he wrote the song.
According to the artist, “I was in a dark place because I had a little experience with some people, and I did not like how it turned out.”
Mayorkun’s five-month hiatus from releasing new music was also discussed during the interview. He explained that he was out of the country and didn’t find it practical to release new songs while abroad, emphasizing the importance of media rounds in promoting music. The artist mentioned his amicable split with popular UK dancer Cocainna.
Mayorkun, who is signed under DMW (Davido Music Worldwide), praised Davido for being a supportive ally who ensures that his artists receive fair financial recognition. He expressed his appreciation for Davido, stating, “It’s crazy that we met someone who genuinely wanted to help. We would be this financially free.”
In addition to his EP, Mayorkun also featured on Nigerian indigenous rapper Zoro’s ‘Soundcheck‘ album.
African musicians are beginning to move away from the generic term “afrobeats” and are developing their own unique music styles. South African musician Tyla categorizes her music as Afropop, Shallipopi uses Afropluto, and Tems identifies her style as R&B.
Mayorkun clarified that his genre of African sounds is Afro-fusion, explaining, “If I am being honest, if you check my interviews from way back, I have been saying Afro-fusion, and the reason why I always say that is because I believe I can make any kind of song.” This demonstrates his versatility and willingness to explore various musical genres.
