    • Prison didn’t humble me, it’s like home to me – Shatta Wale

Prisons serve as institutions for individuals who have broken the law, but Ghana’s acclaimed artist, Shatta Wale, who recently shared his experiences there, surprisingly referred to it as his “home.”

In October 2021, the Ghanaian dancehall sensation found himself in custody, facing allegations of spreading false information.

In a recent interview with TV3, Shatta Wale opened up about his time behind bars, revealing that he did not experience the usual sense of humility associated with incarceration because he felt strangely comfortable in that environment.

“You see, here in Ghana, we don’t often prioritize helping the country. So, going to jail didn’t really humble me because, when I was in jail, I actually felt like I was at home,” he explained.

According to the Ghanaian music icon, there were inmates who were genuinely delighted to have him there. He went on to mention that he received respect and dignified treatment throughout his stay at the Ankaful Medium Prison in the Central Region.

“There were numerous individuals, some of whom had spent over 30 years there, who were eager to meet Shatta Wale. Some would fetch water for me, and others would share their meals with me. The treatment I received inside those walls was akin to the way I’m treated on the streets,” he recalled.

In his conversation with Giovani Caleb, the show’s host, Shatta emphasized that his time in prison had no adverse impact on his music career. In fact, he asserted that he had released even more hit songs after being released on bail.

“It wasn’t as if they sent me to a place of suffering; when I was there, it felt more like a vacation. Nobody leaves jail and returns with an entirely unchanged mindset, but I came back and released songs like ‘On God,’ ‘JJC,’ and many more,” he proudly stated.
