Egyptian Musicians’ Syndicate Blocks US Rapper Travis Scott’s Concert at Giza Pyramids over ‘Traditions’ Offense

In an unprecedented move, the Egyptian musicians’ syndicate declared its refusal to permit a highly-anticipated concert by renowned US rapper Travis Scott at the iconic Giza pyramids. The announcement, made on Tuesday, July 18, 2023, cited concerns over the offense to “traditions.”

While the pyramids have witnessed performances by international music stars in the past, the powerful musicians’ union has taken a firm stance against certain musical genres, with rap being a frequent target in recent years.

The decision seems to be a part of Egypt’s larger effort to safeguard its history from perceived distortions. The country has been critical of African-American movements claiming cultural ties to the ancient pharaohs.

As the authority overseeing all live and recorded music matters in the Arab world’s most populous nation, the musicians’ syndicate stated in a press release that Travis Scott’s concert would clash with their cherished traditions.

The syndicate clarified that they usually refrain from intervening in musical events as long as they don’t undermine the ancestral customs and traditions of the Egyptian people.

However, after scrutinizing social media content and the artist’s positions, they claimed to have found documented information on “strange rituals” that go against their values.

The statement, however, did not specify the exact rituals attributed to the hip-hop heavyweight, who is currently on a world tour.
