    On Wednesday, June 28, 2023, Bayern Munich officially announced the cancellation of their sponsorship deal with Qatar Airways, following a series of protests, particularly from the club’s supporters. The decision was reached “by mutual agreement” and is set to take effect on June 30.

    The partnership between the duo had been a subject of controversy and concerns regarding Qatar’s human rights record. Both parties released a joint statement acknowledging the contentious nature of the partnership, leading to the agreed-upon termination.

    The joint statement from Bayern Munich and the state-owned airline claims that “the ties that FC Bayern has been able to establish with its supporters in the Arab world through Qatar Airways will remain.”

    While the CEO of Qatar Airways, Akbar Al Baker, wished Bayern “all the best for the future.”

    Due to alleged human rights violations, Germany’s largest club, Bayern Munich, has faced ongoing criticism for its association with Doha and the state-owned airline, particularly in the years preceding the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.
    In the club’s general assembly held in 2021, members voiced their concerns and called for the dissolution of Bayern Munich’s ties to the Gulf State. The criticism stemmed from apprehensions surrounding the human rights situation in Qatar and the club’s connection to Qatar Airways.

    The calls from the club’s assembly members reflect a growing sentiment among supporters who emphasize the importance of ethical considerations and human rights principles in football partnerships.
