Vinicius Jr. vows to make Flamengo return ‘one day’.
Real Madrid star Vinicius Junior promised to return to his former club “one day” while attending the Flamengo-Vasco da Gama derby at the Maracana.
The Brazilian attacker, who finished the European season with Real Madrid, has taken a flight to Rio to take a brief break from the game.
He saw his former team Flamengo defeat Vasco 4-1 in a derby match at the Maracana. The forward entered the field during halftime and was presented with a jersey with his name and number on the back by both teams.
“It’ll take a while, but I will be back one day (to Flamengo). Very happy to be here at Maracana, at Flamengo and at a classic. Very happy for everything they did for me. That I can stand firm to continue the fight for those to come,” he said.
After Vinicius was subjected to racial abuse in Spain during Real Madrid’s 1-0 defeat at Valencia, Flamengo and Cruzeiro expressed their solidarity by sitting down for the opening 36 seconds of their Serie A match in the final week of May after emerging from the tunnel wearing t-shirts with anti-racism messages. Throughout the game, Flamengo players wore shirts with “All with Vinicius Jr” emblazoned on them to demonstrate support for him.
