Chelsea renounce end-of-season awards.
Chelsea has opted to cancel its season-ending awards ceremony following a terrible season that would see them place in the bottom half of the standings.
The Blues are expected to end their most recent Premier League season outside of the top 10 with their lowest-ever divisional point tally.
Even if they win their next two games, they are now in 12th position with 43 points and will not be able to meet the 50-point threshold.
The London club hasn’t been in the bottom half since the 1995–96 campaign when Glenn Hoddle was their manager, and they took 11th place with 50 points.
According to the Evening Standard, club officials have decided that it would be “inappropriate” to hold an end-of-season awards ceremony due to the failings of the men’s team. Instead, awards for men’s player of the season, academy player of the season and goal of the season will be presented before the Blues’ final home match against Newcastle on Sunday at Stamford Bridge.
Since 2019, Chelsea has been unable to host the awards ceremony in person. Before fines against former owner Roman Abramovich and the ensuing change of ownership led the club to postpone the awards event last season, Covid-19 interrupted the next two years.
Because of his reliable defence, it is anticipated that Thiago Silva will win the Player of the Year title from the fans.
If they defeat Reading on Saturday, the Chelsea women’s team, which has enjoyed an incredible season, will win the WSL. Additionally, they prevailed against Manchester United in the FA Cup final to win earlier in May.
On Thursday at Old Trafford, the Chelsea men’s team will resume play in the Premier League against Manchester United.
