The Blues hope to steal a march on their rivals, with Manchester United and Liverpool keen on securing midfielders next summer.
According to reports, the Blues have made a request to Benfica for the transfer of Enzo Fernandez of Argentina for a sum of £115 million. At the Qatar 2022 FIFA World Cup, the youngster won the award for the best young player.
According to reports from the Daily Mail, Benfica has a £105 million release clause on the player, but the Blues are willing to outbid any other team by paying more. When the midfielder returned to Benfica, he discussed his plans to stay with club president Rui Costa.
Costa is optimistic that Fernandez will decide to stay with the Portuguese squad if they can deliver on their promises of winning their local league and competing for the Champions League title.
