Temilade Openiyi, nicknamed Tems, from Nigeria was awarded the award for best new artist at this year’s Soul Train Awards, which were broadcast on Saturday. She is the first African to do so.

On November 26, 2022, a Saturday, the Orleans Arena in Las Vegas played host to the 2022 Soul Train Awards.

The Soul Train Music Awards are an annual music awards programme that recognises the best in African-American culture, music, and entertainment.

Tems was named the best new artist at the Soul Train Awards in 2022, earning her second victory at the event and making her the first and only female African musician to receive the prestigious accolade.

Tems has now won twice, joining Starboy Wizkid as the only other African artist to take home such a coveted honour.

Tems won the award over fellow countrymen CKay, Fireboy DML, and other contenders.

According to Billboard, the Nigerian singer is the first African winner in this category.

Tems was featured on Wizkid’s global hit “Essence”, which won best collaboration at the 2021’s award.

Meanwhile, Beyoncé was the top winner at the awards. She won album of the year for the fourth time with Renaissance, song of the year for the third time with “Break My Soul”, and best collaboration for “Make Me Say It Again, Girl”, featuring Ronald Isley & The Isley Brothers.
