Here are the top Naija songs of October 2021;
Simi- Woman
For her first single of the year, Simi dropped ‘Woman“, a Fela-inspired track that sheds light on the challenges of being a woman.
Prior to dropping the song, Simi started a #NobodyLikeWoman challenge on Social media.
A trend that has seen women from various spheres of life express both similar and unique social challenges, misogyny, and stereotype shaming they face as women.
According to her, this song is about uplifting women and pointing out the various ways women have been looked down upon in society.
It is a song about uplifting women as much as it is about pointing out the institutional barriers placed on them, Simi points out society’s unequal treatment while demanding a more equitable system.
Built around a jaunty instrumental and accessorized by blustery horns, “Woman” leans into the defiant ethos of afrobeat to reclaim the narrative for women and turns Simi’s long-held socio-political beliefs on equality into a sonic thesis for women’s liberation.
The song samples elements of Fela’s popular song, “Water No Get Enemy” while maintaining a contemporary feel. The music video is currently at 2.8 Million views.
Timaya ft Buju- Cold Outside
Timaya might have been on a low key but his songs aren’t. This month, the Egberi Papa dropped his second single of the year featuring one of Nigeria’s current sought-after artists, Buju.
This song shows a significant evolution with Timaya’s sound and a different dimension to him. He and Buju create a synergy that produces a contagious vibe one can’t resist.
Bad Boy Timz- Move
Bad Boy Timz has been away for a while, reportedly due to a fallout with his label, Anonymous music after terminating his contract with the outfit and even sued them for a whopping two hundred million naira for “libellous publication”, following the distribution of his arrest video to online blogs and media houses by Anonymous music.
Now signed to his self-owned music label, Shock Absorbers Music, he resurfaced this month with a club anthem titled “Move”
The song is a bouncy uptempo song that consisted of fast-paced beats and a lot of Lamba. The Afro-fusion tune is a groovy tune that will definitely have you moving.
Flavour- Levels
Flavour might not be Wizkid, Davido or Burna Boy but he commands respect in the Industry and dominates his own territory.
“With ‘Levels“, Flavour teams up with his usual partner in crime, Masterkraft to create a masterpiece that is sure to dominate the South East region during the festivities period.
Flavour in his usual Afro Highlife spirit employs elements of Ogene to create a track that pays homage to
The song is also dominating Tik-Tok with its challenge, with different people showcasing the beautiful dimensions of Igbo culture. This song is a groovy highlife tune that sees Flavour flaunt his flamboyant lifestyle with his friends.
On the music video, he features Nollywood actors and notable Igbo public figures like Cubana Chiefpriest, Zubby Michael, Kanayo O. Kanayo, Yul Edochie, Larry Gaga and more.
Zlatan- Ale Yi
Ahead of his forthcoming sophomore album, Zlatan released his third single of the year, “Ale Yi” this month. Produced by Niphkeys, the song sees Zlatan sing about the vanity of life and how he can’t come and kill himself.
Zlatan might be all Lamba sometimes but his lyrics definitely have one or two messages one can take away.
