Spotlighting Nigerian-International Collaborations that deserved better.
Nigerian-International collaborations have been one of the most beneficial things to the Nigerian Music Industry.
The joy, excitement, exposure, and attention that comes with it have helped pushed the Afrobeat Movement to the Global stage.
While over the years we have had good and powerful International collaborations that have successfully accelerated the Industry, some have failed to meet their targets.
Don’t get us wrong, these songs didn’t blow up like that not because they weren’t good, it’s mostly time, promotions and other factors that have hindered their progress.
So we compiled a list of Nigerian-International Collaborations that deserve more flowers and attention.

Tiwa Savage x Omarion – Get It Now
Off from Tiwa Savage‘s ‘Sugar cane‘ EP was the RnB single, “Get it now“. The Original didn’t get much attention like “Sugar Cane” and “Malo” until the remix.
While ‘Get it Now‘ was amplified with Omarion jumping on it, but it didn’t have the much-deserved attention as other International collaborations.
Wizkid x Chris Brown – African Bad Gyal
This song was recorded in 2014 but it wasn’t released till when it got included in Sounds From The Other Side album which dropped in 2017.
However, this sweet song was overshadowed by Wizkid and Drake’s “Come Closer” collaboration. Chris Brown would however go on to dominate the airwaves with Davido in 2019 with their collaboration “Blow My Mind.”
Davido x Tinashe – How Long
See there are so many reasons why this song didn’t work, although none is as a result of the quality of the song itself.
Davido had signed to Sony Music in 2016 and released his debut EP, ‘Son of Mercy” a few months later. The only international collaboration, “How Long” which featured Tinashe was released as the EP second single.
“How Long” contains elements of Afropop and soulful house music. While the song was beautiful, it didn’t fare well as Davido’s other successful singles.
Yemi Alade x Rick Ross – Oh My Gosh
Yemi Alade joined forces with American Hip-Hop/Rap Legend – Rick Ross, to serve up the remix of “Oh My Gosh” in 2019. She wasn’t the first Nigerian artist Rick ross would collaborate with.
In fact, Rick Ross had collaborated with defunct music duo, P-square on their successful hit “Onyinye” which is one of Nigeria’s biggest international collaborations to date.
However, the reception to the remix “Oh My Gosh” was underwhelming unlike what the original version had gotten. The remix had every potential to be a hit record, but one can’t have everything they desire, can they?

Davido x Rae Sremmurd x Young Thug – Pere
2017 was Davido’s year, he had hits like “Fall” and ‘If” dominating airwaves and he decided to test the international waters again with “Pere.”
While ‘Pere” isn’t a bad song, it just couldn’t win against crowd favourites “Fall” and ‘If” despite Young Thug and Rae Sremmurd jumping on it.
