Ayra Starr surpasses Tyla as the African singer with the most Spotify listeners
Nigerian artist Ayra Starr has made history by surpassing South African singer Tyla to become the African artist with the most monthly listeners on Spotify.
On June 4, 2024, Ayra Starr achieved this landmark feat, reaching 31,406,881 monthly listeners, while Tyla had 31,223,494.
This accomplishment places Ayra Starr among a prestigious group of African artists, including Wizkid, CKay, Burna Boy, Tems, and Rema, who have previously held the record for the most Spotify monthly listeners.
CKay set an African record in 2021 with 30 million monthly listeners at the peak of his global hit single “Love Nwantiti.” Rema reached 34 million monthly listeners in 2023 during the global success of his song “Calm Down.”
Ayra Starr’s recent surge in Spotify listeners can be attributed to the success of her second album, “The Year I Turned 21.”
The 15-track album features collaborations with Seyi Vibez, Asake, Giveon, Coco Jones, Aniita, and Milar, and has received critical acclaim.
It also set a new record for the most opening day Spotify streams for an album by a Nigerian female artist, highlighting her significant impact and status as one of Africa’s biggest stars.
In other news, Ayra Starr has set a new record with her sophomore album, continuing her streak of achievements.
The album has reached a new peak of #6 on the UK Apple Albums chart, making it the highest-charting album ever by a Nigerian female artist in the UK.
This historic achievement is not the only reason to celebrate. On its release day, “The Year I Turned 21“ garnered a staggering 6.3 million streams, showcasing Ayra Starr’s immense global appeal.
