Tems’ EP ‘For Broken Ears’ gets historic RIAA certification
Nigerian superstar Tems has achieved a historic milestone with her debut EP, “For Broken Ears,” receiving a gold certification from the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA). This certification marks a significant achievement, as Tems becomes the first Nigerian female artist to have an RIAA-certified project.
Released in 2020, “For Broken Ears” features seven tracks, including the hit singles “Free Mind” and “Higher,” both of which have enjoyed substantial success in the United States.
The EP’s gold certification indicates that it has surpassed 500,000 in sales in the U.S., highlighting its widespread popularity and Tems’ growing influence in the international music scene.
Tems initially gained global recognition through her collaboration with Nigerian megastar Wizkid on the hit song “Essence.” Following this breakthrough, she continued to rise in prominence, with her singles “Higher” and “Free Mind” achieving impressive success, including multiple weeks on the Billboard Hot 100 chart.
With the certification of “For Broken Ears,” Tems joins the ranks of Rema and Wizkid, who also have RIAA-certified projects. Wizkid fourth album, “Made In Lagos,” and Rema’s debut album, “Raves & Roses,” have both been certified gold by the RIAA.

Looking forward, Tems is set to release her debut LP, “Born In The Wild,” on June 7, 2024. In anticipation of the album, she has already released singles such as “Me & U,” “Not An Angel,” and “Love Me Jeje,” which sample the classic Nigerian song of the same title by Seyi Sodimu and Shaffy Bello.
Tems has also been nominated for the 2024 BET Awards, with nods for Best Video Director and Best Gospel/Inspirational Song for “Me & U.” This adds to her growing list of accolades and underscores her impact on both the Nigerian and international music scenes.
