African music, ranging from the sounds of Wizkid and Davido to emerging talents like Ayra Starr and Tiwa Savage, is currently undergoing a global renaissance, particularly in the United States. Tyla notes that Tems‘ ascent to fame has played a significant role in this resurgence.

On March 28, 2024, the acclaimed “Water” songstress discussed with NPR the trajectory of African talent breaking into the mainstream, reflecting on her own journey to prominence.

“We’ve obviously had African artists that have pushed boundaries, but I feel like now is a time when people are actually paying attention to us properly, and actually latching on to the music and the culture, and showing interest beyond the trends,” she explained. “And we have African artists leading it.”

When discussing her approach to creating hit songs, Tyla revealed that she, along with many other artists, frequently combines pop and R&B melodies with beats that honor their cultural heritage and influences. She specifically credited Nigerian singer Tems for inspiring her to adopt this approach.

“Of our generation, she’s like the example,” the Grammy Award winner stated. “She’s been killing it, and she’s been opening so many doors for us.”

TYLA’s latest release hit streaming platforms, featuring additional guest appearances from Gunna, Skillibeng, Kelvin Momo, and Becky G. Notably, she enlisted Travis Scott for the remix of her international hit “Water.” Tracks like “ART,” “Truth or Dare,” and “On My Body” have also garnered significant attention and appreciation from fans.

Meanwhile, Tems, who is gearing up for the release of her debut LP later this year, has also collaborated with some of the biggest names in the U.S. music scene. She contributed to the writing of Beyoncé’s “MOVE” and Rihanna’s “Lift Me Up.” Additionally, Future’s track “WAIT FOR U,” featuring Drake, sampled her 2020 release “Higher.”
