“Wizkid’s statement is being misunderstood”- Joeboy speaks on Wizkid’s comments on Afrobeats
Nigerian musician Joeboy has stepped forward to defend fellow Afrobeats star Wizkid, asserting that the public may have misinterpreted Wizkid’s recent comments or actions.
Wizkid’s remarks, wherein he stated that he did not solely identify as an Afrobeats artist, sparked significant controversy among Nigerian netizens. However, Joeboy appears to hold the belief that the situation has been misunderstood or misrepresented.
He said, “Wizkid’s statement is being misunderstood, he is not running away from Afrobeats.”
Joeboy expresses his support for Wizkid. “All we are saying is our identity is Afrobeats but please don’t box us because we can make other genres of music too” Joeboy continued.
Joeboy stands in solidarity with Wizkid, echoing the sentiment that while Afrobeats serve as their foundation, they should not feel confined to creating solely within that genre.

Recall, Wizkid declared that he views the concept of afrobeats as artificial, stating that it is not a distinct genre of music.
Wizkid had previously hinted at his reluctance to be labeled as an afrobeats artist in earlier social media posts. In his recent post shared on Saturday, March 16, 2024, he elaborated on his stance, explaining why he believes afrobeats is not a genre.
The singer expressed that throughout his extensive and successful career, he has explored various musical styles.
Therefore, classifying all his music under the umbrella of afrobeats does not accurately represent his artistic diversity. He adamantly stated his aversion to having his music solely categorized as afrobeats, dismissing it as an oversimplified classification.
He asserted that there is no such thing as afrobeats, describing it as a superficial attempt to compartmentalize the rich and diverse musical landscape created by African artists.
