Davido acknowledges P-square, 2face for their past impact
Davido, the King of Afrobeat, has commended Nigeria’s older generation of artists for being changemakers. He stated that the sacrifices made in the past are what the new cats of music enjoy now.
In an episode of the YouTube series “The Bridge,” Davido was joined by Real Madrid French midfielder Aurelian Thouameni, supermodel Cindy Bruna, and Audemars Piguet CEO François-Henry Bennahmias.
During the interview, Davido reflected on the immense contributions of the older generation of Afrobeats stars, such as 2Baba, D’banj, and P-Square, acknowledging their international success and the sacrifices they made to advance the genre.
Davido also opened up about his own journey with Sony Music after signing in 2016, describing it as a challenging period where he had to carve out a space for himself in an international market that was unfamiliar with his African achievements.
In acknowledging the groundwork laid by Afrobeat trailblazers, Davido emphasized the importance of recognizing their sacrifices and how they have paved the way for the success of the current generation. He underscored the notion that any sacrifices made by the present generation would ultimately benefit the future of African music.
He said, “I looked at my manager and told him ‘I am not starting again’. It takes time to understand that what we are sacrificing now, what P-square, D-banji, and 2face sacrificed for us is what we are enjoying. What we are sacrificing now the next generation is going to come and be bigger because the music is only going to grow bigger”.
