Chike’s ‘Egwu’ featuring Mohbad tops Nigeria’s biggest aggregate music chart
Nigerian singer Chike has achieved his first No. 1 song on Nigeria’s TurnTable Top 100 chart with his latest track, ‘Egwu,’ featuring the late Mohbad. This chart, which combines radio and TV airplay with streaming data from platforms such as Apple Music, Spotify, Audiomack, and Boomplay, highlights the song’s widespread popularity.
‘Egwu‘ is a sensational R&B track that seamlessly blends Igbo indigenous music with Afrobeats elements. Since its release in December 2023, the song has garnered commercial acclaim and has been widely shared on social media, particularly on TikTok, where it has been used over 400,000 times.
The success of ‘Egwu‘ is further underscored by its 5.9 million streams on Spotify within just one month of its release. This accomplishment marks Chike’s highest-charting entry on the TurnTable Top 100, surpassing his previous hit, the ‘Running’ remix featuring Simi, which peaked in the top 5.
For the late Mohbad, ‘Egwu‘ is his second No. 1 entry on the chart, following ‘Ask About Me,’ which spent one week at the top. Despite Mohbad’s passing in September 2023, his music continues to enjoy a significant commercial resurgence, with songs from his EPs ‘Light‘ and ‘Blessed‘ soaring on streaming platforms. The success of his collaboration with Chike adds to his posthumous acclaim as his music continues to resonate with audiences.
