South African rapper Nasty C has offered a counterargument to the controversial statement made by Nigerian Afrobeats superstar Wizkid, who claimed earlier this year that “rap is dead.”

Contrary to Wizkid’s assertion, Nasty C expressed the belief that while hip-hop might currently be taking a backseat in mainstream music, it will never truly die. In an interview with Glitch Africa, the 25-year-old hip-hop artist shared his perspective on the ongoing rap debate sparked by Wizkid’s statement.

Nasty C said, “I don’t think rap or hip-hop will ever die, man. It’s more than just music. It’s more than just a sound. It’s a way of life; it’s a culture.

“It might take the backseat, you know what I mean. Fresh sounds are very important to keep the culture alive. You know what I mean? As Africans we are very diverse, man.

“We’ve all these different sounds that we need to take out to the world so that they understand that we are super talented. So, hip-hop will take the backseat for a little bit but it will never die. Trust me.”

Recall that the “Essence” vocalist declared in an interview with 10 magazine a few months ago that rap is dead and that Afrobeats should take center stage in the hip-hop genre.

The CEO of Starboy Entertainment claims that most Nigerian hip-hop artists use the same rhythms and have comparable styles.

Later, on the internet, Wizkid referred to the Nigerian rappers as “non-rappers” who “lack development,” citing Nasty C of South Africa and Sarkodie of Ghana as the “real rappers” in Africa.
