South African Afropop Princess Tyla has achieved a significant milestone by securing her first Grammy Award nomination. In celebration of this noteworthy achievement, she took to social media to share her joy.

The Recording Academy recently unveiled the complete list of nominees for the 65th edition of the Grammy Awards, slated to take place on February 4, 2024, at the Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles. Tyla, the talented South African Afropop singer, earned her inaugural nomination in the distinguished ‘Best African Music Performance’ category.

Tyla joyfully shared her accomplishment on social media, expressing her disbelief with a tweet that read, ‘No Waysss.’

In a notable update, the Recording Academy has introduced three new categories for the upcoming 2024 Grammys, namely Best African Music Performance, Best Alternative Jazz Album, and Best Pop Dance Recording. These additions underscore the Academy’s commitment to recognizing a diverse range of musical genres and contributions.

‘Water‘ by Tyla has experienced remarkable success since its inception. The viral sensation made its debut on the Billboard Hot 100, gaining momentum after trending on TikTok for several weeks. Notably, ‘Water’ etched its name in history as the first solo song by a South African artist to grace the chart since jazz legend Hugh Masekela’s ‘Grazing in the Grass’ 55 years ago.

Achieving the pinnacle of success, ‘Water‘ claimed the top spot on the U.S. Afrobeats Songs chart, putting an end to the 58-week reign of Rema and Selena Gomez’s “Calm Down.”

The international appeal of ‘Water‘ propelled Tyla to become the first South African artist to amass 10 million monthly listeners on Spotify, a significant milestone acknowledged in the African music scene.

As the Recording Academy introduces the inaugural category for Best African Music Performance, ‘Water‘ faces stiff competition from other notable artists such as Asake & Olamide with ‘Amapiano,’ Ayra Starr with ‘Rush,’ Burna Boy with ‘City Boys,’ and Davido featuring Musa Keys with ‘Unavailable.’ The inclusion of this category highlights the growing diversity and recognition of African talent on the global stage.
