Davido celebrates Osimhen, Oshoala as they bag Ballon d’Or nominations

Award-winning Nigerian singer David Adeleke, professionally known as Davido, took to social media to celebrate the nominations of Victor Osimhen and Asisat Oshoala for the Ballon d’Or.

Osimhen’s nomination, alongside Oshoala and Kanu Nwankwo, marks a significant achievement as only a few Nigerian players have been nominated for this prestigious award. French Football, the organizers of the Ballon d’Or, officially confirmed their nominations on September 6th, 2023.

Victor Osimhen had an exceptional season, contributing to Napoli’s first Serie A title win in 33 years. He became the first Nigerian male player to be nominated for the Ballon d’Or in 24 years, with Kanu Nwankwo being the last to achieve this honor.

Asisat Oshoala, a forward for Barça Femení, was also listed among the nominees in the women’s category. This marks her second nomination, with her historic achievement last year as the first African to make the list. Oshoala had a remarkable season, winning the Primera Division title, the Supercopa de Espana Femenina, and the Champions League. She was the joint-top scorer in the Spanish domestic league with 21 goals and also represented the Super Falcons in the round of 16 at the Women’s World Cup in Australia and New Zealand.
