Court Allows Seun Kuti ‘Suspended Bail’, gives police 48-hour window to complete investigation
A Magistrate Court in Yaba on Tuesday granted bail to Popular Afrobeats musician, Oluseun Anikulapo Kuti, who is popularly known as Seun Kuti.
The defendant is required to present two sureties who are owners of landed property in the state of Lagos.
Police were also instructed by Magistrate Adeola Olatunbosun to wrap up their inquiry in 48 hours.
Seun was accused of violating Section 356 of the Criminal Code Act by assaulting a police officer.
S. A. Adebese, the police prosecutor, had asked the court to detain the defendant for 21 days.
The Directorate of Public Prosecutions (DPP) would be able to produce legal advice within three weeks, according to the attorney.
But the defence counsel, Adeyinka Olumide-Fusika, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), opposed the plea in his argument.
In his request for the court not to remand his client, Olumide-Fusika stated that he was not aware of any motion to that effect.
The illustrious Fela Kuti’s son was detained for assaulting a police officer when his car was halted on the Third Mainland Bridge.
Kuti resisted providing any statement when questioned at the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) in Panti, Yaba.
According to his lawyer, Benjamin Hundeyin, a police spokesman, proclaimed himself the Investigating Police Officer (IPO) by “issuing a report of his investigative work” in the media.
