Mercy Chinwo sues Obidiz for using her name in secular song, demands N2Bn in damages.
Gospel singer, Mercy Chinwo has filed a lawsuit filed against secular musician Obidiz for appropriating her name and photo in a commercial song.
Mercy Chinwo lodged a complaint against Obidiz following his latest single release whose title was her name.
The artist in the song provided an example of a wayward, club girl, and mentioned Mercy Chinwo in the phrase.
“She dey share me the cake, but she no want commit. Mercy Chinwo for church, but for club na Cardi B sef.”
The gospel singer said in her lawsuit, which was filed on March 23rd, that the musician had used her name and image indecently and shamelessly in a worldly jam.
Obidiz was sent with a “cease and desist” letter from Mercy Chinwo’s legal team requesting that he stop using her image rights to advertise his music.

In accordance with the cease and desist notice, Obidiz was required to immediately pull the song he had released off of all streaming services and delete any promotional videos utilising the “Excess Love‘ crooner’s image or clips from any social media websites.
The full power of the law would be used against him and Mercy Chinwo will seek damages for 2 billion Naira if he refuses to abide by the stipulations in the letter.
The letter, dated March 23, 2023, carried the heading,
“DEROGATORY AND DEFAMATORY USE OF THE NAME AND IMAGE OF MINISTER MERCY CHINWO IN A SECULAR MUSIC AUDIO AND VIDEO: NOTICE TO CEASE AND DESIST.”
