A well-known Jamaican disc jockey, Rodney Basil Price, often known as Bounty Killer, criticises Afrobeats for its lyrics, citing Burna Boy’s “Ye” as an example.

In a recent interview, the Patwa DJ stated that Afrobeats is a genre with excellent melodies but no good lyrics.

A video going around on Twitter shows Bounty Killer, a famed Jamaican musician, discussing how Afrobeats singers, like Burna Boy, focus mainly on the tune and pay little attention to their lyrics.

Price cited the 2018 number-one single YE by Burna Boy as an example of a song with a catchy sound but no lyrics.

“Afrobeats have no lyrics; they have a lot of melody, grove, and topic. Ye ye ye is not a lyric; it is a topic. The song only has a style, melody and topic.”

According to him, the African giant’s song has just style, a melody to dance to, and a topic, which he said was the same as the song’s title, YE.
