Tiwa Savage turns actress, directs new movie ‘Water and Garri’
Tiwa Savage has advanced in her career by becoming a co-director and lead actor in an upcoming movie.
On Wednesday, the singer of “Somebody’s Son” said that she will make her acting debut in the film “Water and Garri,” which would be her first movie.
According to the news source Screen Daily, Tiwa’s 2021 EP with the same name served as the inspiration for the film Water and Garri.
In the movie, which is set in the Ghanaian city of Cape Coast, Tiwa portrays a fashion designer with a promising career in the United States who returns to her native continent of Africa to deal with the guilt she left behind.
The 49-year-old singer is joined by Mike Afolarin, Andrew Bunting and Jemima Osunde.
Sharing a post on Instagram of a picture of her on set and with directors, she wrote, “This is about to be an ICONIC moment. My first calling and co-directing debut with the GOAT @meji Alabi.”

With Comfort Emmanuel serving as the writer and Meji Alabi as the director, “Water and Garri” is a joint effort of Unbound Studios and JM Films. This highly anticipated picture is the producing companies’ debut feature-length effort.
Tiwa Savage, who stars in the movie and also serves as an executive producer through her company, Everything Savage, composed and performs the soundtrack’s original music. The film was shot in the Ghanaian city of Cape Coast, and primary photography has officially wrapped.
The singer discussed her strong connection to the story and the opportunity to delve into a new area of artistic expression in an interview with Screen Daily.
“This project was a complete labour of love that has been a dream of mine for a number of years. Performing as Aisha allowed me to be totally vulnerable and pushed me to express myself in a way that I’ve never done before. It was an honour to share my debut as an actress with Meji whilst filming on the African continent with a cast and crew that I have immense admiration and respect for. I’m excited for the world to see this film.”
Meji Alabi, the director of the upcoming feature film “Water and Garri,” shares his experience working with Tiwa Savage and the team. Having collaborated with Tiwa on music projects in the past, Alabi says the “film was a perfect progression of our creative growth and shared vision of exploring beyond boundaries.”
He praised Tiwa’s performance as a lead actress, and is excited to share the film with audiences.
