Tottenham Hotspur have confirmed that Matt Doherty’s move to Atletico Madrid is permanent rather than on loan.

On deadline day, According to reports that the Irishman was in talks with the Spanish club for a straight six-month loan, with Spurs willing to transfer some of their existing right-back options to make room for Pedro Porro.

However, with time running out to complete deals, it became apparent Tottenham would not be able to send Doherty out on loan.

According to FIFA regulations, only eight senior players may go on loan in a given season; Spurs have fully utilized their quota.

Harry Winks, Sergio Reguilon, Bryan Gil, Giovani Lo Celso, Tanguy Ndombele, Joe Rodon, Djed Spence, and Destiny Udogie are all under contract right now, but they all play for different teams.

Due to the fact that Doherty would have to leave on a long-term basis for a transfer to be legally recognized, Spurs chose to mutually terminate his contract in order to make a transfer to Atletico Madrid possible.

Ironically, Spence, who is thought to have rejected a loan offer from Atletico earlier in the transfer window, joined Rennes on deadline day and was the last of the eight senior loanees to go.

Doherty is the first Irish player to play for one of Spain’s three top clubs after signing a six-month contract with Atletico.
