Gareth Southgate reveals why he continued as England manager.
Gareth Southgate has acknowledged that his family was a major factor in his choice to continue managing England after the team’s disappointing World Cup performance in Qatar.
Due to a late goal from Olivier Giroud and a missed penalty by Harry Kane, the Three Lions—one of the favourites to win the 2022 World Cup—were eliminated by eventual champions France in the quarterfinals.
After England’s World Cup departure, speculation over Southgate’s future in charge of the team started to circulate. The manager himself acknowledged that he was “very confused” about continuing.

Southgate eventually decided to stay on as the Three Lions manager and now, in an interview with ITV, he’s explained his thought process: “They [his family] left Doha saying you’ve got to give this one more go and try to get this trophy.
“I’m in a job with the chance to make some history and I have the privilege of leading the national team. “It’s been an unbelievable experience. I think we’ve made progress with the team across the years we’ve been in charge and I’m determined to try to drive the team that next step.
“We’re in a different landscape to any previous England team because of the success we’ve had. In our own minds, winning is probably the only thing that’s going to fulfil us.”
