Raphael Varane talks up Manchester United’s Premier League title chances after Man City win.
Manchester United defender Raphael Varane has endorsed claims that his team is competing for the Premier League title. Over the weekend, the Red Devils closed the gap on league leaders Arsenal to nine points.
On Saturday, Erik ten Hag’s team defeated rivals Manchester City 2-1 in a thrilling comeback triumph (January 14). Many people believed Arsenal and City would compete for the title.
However, following the win, United now trail second-placed Manchester City by a point after 18 games. They are fourth, with Newcastle United above them in third on the same points, but boast a superior goal difference of 14 goals.
Varane, who helped neutralize City’s prolific scorer Erling Haaland in the derby, believes Manchester United are in the title race.
He said (via ESPN): “Everything is possible. We’ll just take it game by game. It’s a long way to go and it’s very difficult. The intensity of every game is incredible, the physical effort.”

The only Premier League team still taking part in four competitions is Ten Hag’s team. Varane continued by mentioning the intensity of the English game:
“It’s like the same intensity of a big Champions [League] game every game. The rhythm is very high. The players are very well prepared physically. We know how difficult it is. But we’re solid, we’re strong. We just need to use the quality players with the ball.”

For £34 million, the French defender signed up with Manchester United in the summer of 2021. He struggled in his first season at Old Trafford as the team struggled in 2021–22. They failed to win any trophies for the fifth year in a row as they placed sixth in the league.
But this season, he has excelled at the heart of United’s defence alongside players like Lisandro Martinez and Luke Shaw. In 15 games across various leagues, he has contributed to the team’s clean sheets.
