Grammy 2023: Why Wizkid Was Not Nominated For A Grammy Award
One of the biggest exports from Africa, Wizkid, was conspicuously absent from the Recording Academy’s complete nomination list, which was announced on Tuesday, November 15, 2022, in advance of the legendary 65th edition of the renowned Grammy Awards.
Big Wiz’s exclusion raised many questions on social media, and the reason is not difficult to explain given that the singer did not release any projects during the period in which he was eligible for the Grammys.
Recall that last year the singer bagged two nominations at the Global Music Album and Global Music Performance with his “Made in Lagos” album and hit song, “Essence“.

Fans were curious why “Essence” was not included in the general Song of the Year category and when Grammy award CEO, Harvey Mason was asked, he said;
“It is a great record. He’s a very talented artist. I can’t speak to why it didn’t make it, but I do really love the record.”
Many who were hoping that in this latest edition of the Grammy, Big Wiz’s name will be on the nomination list were disappointed.
What Is the Grammy Award Eligibility Period?
The Recording Academy, which organises the Grammy Awards, states that the eligibility period for this prestigious award runs from Friday, October 1, 2021, to Friday, September 30, 2022. This means that the only works or projects that can be considered for the 65th edition must be released within the time frame mentioned.
Wizkid’s ‘More Love Less Ego‘ was not released until November 11th, 2022, which means that while it is not eligible for the Grammy Awards 2023, it is eligible for the nomination ahead of the 66th edition in 2024.
Nigerians on Grammy 2023 Nomination list
While Wizkid will not be representing Nigeria on the Grammy nomination list, two of Nigerian music industry’s biggest were able to secure spots on the list.
First up is regular Grammy customer, Burna Boy who is making his third appearance on the prestigious nomination list.
The African Giant was nominated for the Global Music Album thanks to “Love Damini” and Global Music Performance thanks to his global hit “Last Last.”
The singer will be up against Angelique Kidjo in the global music album just like in 2019 when he lost to her.
Burna Boy now has a total of six Grammy nominations, with one win for Twice As Tall, which took home the award for Best Global Music Album.

Tems received two significant nods for her work on the popular song “Wait For U,” which she co-wrote with Future and Drake. The singer was nominated in the categories of the prestigious awards for “Best Rap Song” and “Best Melodic Rap Performance.”
Tems also received another nomination for the Album Of The Year as a featured artist on Beyonce’s ‘Renaissance’ album taking her total nominations for the Grammy Awards 2023 to 3 nominations.
