Wizkid tells the story of how he met Tems.
Wizkid has discussed how he first met Tems, with whom he co-wrote the popular song “Essence,” and how they got to know one another.
Wizkid claimed in a conversation with Flaunt that he met the singer through Muyiwa Awoniyi, who serves as her manager.
The musician claimed to be a fan of Tems since she had a few songs that he liked and that was well-liked prior to the release of “Essence.”
“Tems and I connected through one of my boys I’ve known for a while. He actually manages her,”
“But, I was already a fan of hers since she had a few songs that I really liked and a few that were even popular before we made ‘Essence’.
“So, I would also say it’s ultimately the music that connected us,” Wizkid said.
Wizkid claimed that hearing newbies making good music reminds him of himself when he first started making music.

He said that knowing how important collaborations were when he started his career, he is always in music sessions with popular and unpopular artists.
Wizkid said that as long as the connection is genuine and the music is good, he would always collaborate with artists.
“Every time I hear a new, young artist in Nigeria making good music or doing something fresh, it sort of reminds me of myself back when I first started. I know how important collaborations were back then for me at that stage of my career. Even now, I still enjoy collaborating. I’m always in sessions with other talent, both known and unknown. As long as the music is good and the connection is genuine, I’ll always collaborate with you.”
He said that this attitude was the same when he made “Essence” with Tems.
“That’s exactly how it was with Tems when we made “Essence.” I think after we finished the song, I tweeted “Tems and I made magic.” That’s truthfully how I felt making the song with her. I knew the song was special. I’m glad people appreciate it.”
