Nigeria & Germany celebrate U17 World Cup bronze medal match after tense shootout.
After Sunday’s fiercely contested third-place playoff, Germany joined Nigeria in celebrating their U17 Women’s World Cup bronze medal as they danced to the song “Cough (Odo)” by Kizz Daniel.
Although Nigeria took a 3-0 lead thanks to goals from Opeyemi Ajakaye, Amina Bello, and Edidiong Etim, the defending European champions rallied with goals from Jella Veit, Paulina Bartz, and Loreen Bender late in the second half, and the outcome of the play-off was decided by post-game penalties.
For Germany, Paulina Platner, Bender, and Bartz all missed their attempts at successful conversions, while Blessing Sunday, Edidiong Etim, and Ajakaye scored their penalties to give Nigeria the victory.
Due to German goalie Eve Boettcher’s save of Tumininu Adeshina’s attempt, the Flamingos only missed one penalty.

It was the very first time Nigeria reached the last four of the global junior competition.
Previously they had only advanced to the quarter-finals, and this was at 2010, 2012, and 2014 editions.
They also defeated New Zealand and Chile in their group matches in India, and they defeated the United States of America in the quarterfinals thanks to post-game penalties.
Colombia eliminated them from the semifinals after the match concluded in a scoreless draw in regulation time.
Meanwhile, their feat is also good news for Nigerian football supporters who have had to deal with heartbreak, especially when the senior men’s team failed to qualify for the 2022 World Cup finals in Qatar.
