Nigerian albums that have surpassed 500 million streams on Spotify
Nigerian music is diversified, with a wide range of regional and national musical traditions, which is indicative of the breadth of the continent.
Whether it’s Juju, Apala, Highlife, or Afrobeat, rhythm has always been a vital component in Nigerian music, along with a variety of sounds and a feel-good element.
From the colonial period, when Juju was the dominant sound in the clubs in Lagos, to the post-independence period, when Highlife had overtaken Juju music in popularity, the blending of many sounds and beats to create a new hybrid sound persisted.
Fela started playing jazz music, but in the 1960s he changed things up and invented Afrobeat, which is undoubtedly Nigeria’s biggest musical export.
Afrobeat was created by blending numerous musical styles, including Ghanaian Highlife, Fuji, American Jazz, Soul, and Funk.
These genres were combined to produce a hybrid genre that had never been seen before and took the entire world by storm.
The Nigerian music scene was once seen as average and restricted to a particular genre. If you want to see these musicians perform, you can only listen to their songs on radios, watch their music videos on television (if they are accessible), or go to live events and pay a lot of money to get in.
The development of this musical skill wasn’t lucrative, and Nigerian artists tended to sing in a limited number of genres and in a certain style.
It is reasonable to suppose that they were a little hesitant to experiment and compose new music.
